Ernest “Dutch” Morial achieved a series of firsts in Louisiana. He was the first black
graduate at LSU School of Law who went on to win numerous cases regarding the
segregation of public schools, taxis and the city’s recreation department. Dutch was the first Black person elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives since
Reconstruction and later became the first black judge in the state juvenile court. In
1978, became the first black mayor of New Orleans, and went on to increase the
minority proportion of city workers and policemen.
