I attended the Del Mar Race Track for their Taste of New Orleans event earlier this month, and was able to taste the charbroiled oysters as well as the alligator cheesecake. I knew after the first bite this was not a taste of New Orleans, this was the embodiment of New Orleans and everything in between! The flavors in these dishes were spell bounding and I was sure the chef knew voodoo. My girls and I made a promise to visit this restaurant as soon as we could.
On a very clear Sunday night, we finally made it to Louisiana Purchase, politely perched upon the corner of Louisiana and University in San Diego. As we walked up to the restaurant we were greeted by the sounds of True Saints fans hoopin and hollerin as they watched two television screens mounted to the wall above the bar in hopes of a W over the Cowboys. Being a Chiefs fan and having already won my game I was not concerned nor bothered by their behavior, as it went well with the decor and the spirit of the restaurant. This restaurant is absolutely beautiful inside and out, it is clear that a lot of effort and detail went into making this an intimate place for food lovers to experience culinary perfection!
Although the restaurant was packed we were greeted and seated promptly, we sat at a table for two and the seats were surprisingly extremely comfortable. Our waiter, whom I thought I overheard was name Joe, and he was great, friendly, and very knowledgeable! He made recommendations for our beverages and based on a little info we gave him he was able to match my friend and I with the perfect drinks. I quickly ordered the oysters as they were my main reason for visiting the restaurant. Not only were they delicious but somehow they tasted even better than the first time!
For dinner I ordered the Bayou, your choice of fried or blackened catfish (I went with blackened), sausage, fried cabbage, and Louisiana Spicy tarter sauce. Let me first start off by saying the tarter sauce, although it was fantastic it was not needed. This fish was so perfectly flavored and cooked I couldn't imagine putting anything on it. each bite was perfect! After the first bite of fried cabbage I almost fell out of my chair. I love fried cabbage and I make it at home often but noting could have prepared me for how delicious this fried cabbage was going to be. There is no way I can even put this into words other than you need to get down to the Louisiana Purchase as soon as possible and taste it for yourself! I do not eat meat (I am pescatarian - just a vegetarian that also eats seafood) so I gave my sausage to my dinner date, so I am not able to provide a review on that but I am certain it had to be good.
The Louisiana Purchase is the total experience, food, drinks, atmosphere, and the staff was all wonderful. I recommend you come for a visit and I am certain this spot will be on your list of favorites restaurants in San Diego, they are certainly now on mine!
